India's Tire and Rubber Circular Economy
Opportunities to recover useful materials from end-of-life tires across manufacturing and infrastructure sectors.
End-of-Life Tire Recovery in India
India's tire sector creates opportunities to recover useful materials from end-of-life tires. A January 2026 NITI Aayog report describes India as the world's seventh-largest tire producer, with about 3 percent of global production, and reports domestic tire production of approximately 4.2 million metric tonnes for FY 2024–25. The same report estimates that about 3 million metric tonnes of waste tires were recycled in India during FY 2024, including domestically generated and imported feedstock.
“From recovered rubber products to crumb rubber modified roads, tire recycling can return valuable materials to India's manufacturing and infrastructure markets.”
Recycling can produce materials for further use, including crumb rubber, reclaimed rubber, recovered steel, and recovered carbon-based materials. The NITI Aayog report describes crumb rubber applications in rubber goods and crumb rubber modified bitumen (CRMB). India's Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has also confirmed the use of CRMB in flexible pavement wearing courses.
Recycled Materials for Manufacturing & Infrastructure
Primary materials derived through end-of-life tire processing:
Crumb Rubber
Granules for rubber goods & modified bitumen
Reclaimed Rubber
Compounded base for commercial rubber products
Recovered Steel
High-tensile tire wire for metal remelting
Recovered Carbon Materials
Recovered char and solid carbon derivatives
Crumb Rubber Modified Bitumen (CRMB) in Roads
India's Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has confirmed the use of CRMB in flexible pavement wearing courses.
Flexible Pavement Wearing Course
The wearing course is the topmost layer of flexible pavement directly exposed to traffic. Incorporating crumb rubber modified bitumen (CRMB) contributes to resilient road construction.
Ministry Confirmation
India's Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has confirmed the utilization of crumb rubber modified bitumen in road construction under published technical guidelines.
